Research Study

I Sent 300 Job Applications. Got 2 Interviews. Zero Offers.

Despite Google certifications and 30 years of experience. So I went and found the numbers.

21 million women over 55 travel solo in America. Many are not traveling by choice. They are surviving.

63%

of women over 50 report age discrimination in employment

34%

of older renters spend half or more of their income on housing

41-48%

of older homeless adults had their first homeless episode after age 50

53

median age of workampers in the United States

What’s Inside the Report

Hard Economic Data

Employment discrimination, poverty rates, and housing cost burdens for women over 50, with every figure sourced.

Demographic Projections

The aging wave through 2035, including 1.3 to 2.8 million solo women over 50 projected to be engaged in RV travel and camping.

Workamping Analysis

Workamping as an economic survival strategy, and what the scarce data says about who does it and why.

Why Start in Florida

Net migration of 50,615 baby boomers in 2023, 175 state parks with established volunteer programs, and year-round accessibility.

Research Gaps Identified

What nobody has studied about solo women workampers, and why the coming demographic wave makes those gaps urgent.

Personal Context

The researcher’s own lived experience as a woman over 50 on Social Security, written into the report rather than hidden from it.

You’re Not Alone

If you have sent out the applications, watched the silence, and started wondering whether the problem is you, the report is where you find out it is not. The numbers describe millions of women. The research exists so that the next woman does not have to discover it the hard way.

The Research Continues

From February 2026 through 2027, Solo Sojourn is tracking public conversation about solo women travelers, workamping, Florida public lands, and travel safety using the Talkwalker and Brandwatch Consumer Research platforms through the UF Atlas Lab, under Dr. Nathan Carpenter.

What we are measuring: the volume and sentiment of solo women traveler conversation, RV travel and workamping discussion, Florida public lands conversation, safety concerns, and how communities form online.

Findings are reported in The Solo Sojourn Monthly as they come in. A separate University of Florida IRB-approved study is also underway; see the Research Study page if you would like to take part.
