The Solo Sojourn Monthly
Research findings, app progress, Florida public lands intel, and a place at the table for solo women travelers over 50. One email a month, on the 15th.
Who Is Writing to You
Jolene MacFadden is the founder of Solo Sojourn LLC, a graduate student in the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, and a solo woman traveler with years of full-time RV living and workamping behind her. She is building the Solo Sojourn Trail app and running an IRB-approved study on how women over 50 find and judge safety information about public lands.
This newsletter is where the research, the app, and the community meet. It is written by one person, not a marketing department, and it is shaped by what subscribers write back.

What 600 Volunteer Sites and Zero Gender Data Tell Us About Solo Women Hosts
Hi [FirstName],
This month I want to walk you through one finding from the research and one thing it changed in the app.
From the research: Florida’s park system has no policies written for solo or individual camp hosts, and it has never looked at its volunteer data by gender. That is not a criticism of the people who run it. It is a gap, and it is exactly the gap a solo woman feels when she tries to figure out whether a position is right for her.
What it changed in the Trail app: [Feature update, what subscribers asked for, what shipped, what is next.]
Public lands intel: [Current host openings, a park worth knowing, cell coverage notes.]
Hit reply and tell me what you would want to know before saying yes to a host position. I read every response, and the answers shape what I build and what I write about here.
On the trail,
Jolene MacFadden

Why This Newsletter Exists
Solo women over 50 are traveling, hosting, and working on public lands in growing numbers, and almost no one is studying how they find the information they need to do it safely. Solo Sojourn LLC is doing that work, in the open, and building the app the research says is missing.
Subscribers are not an audience. They are the reason the questions get asked and the tools get built.
Ready to Join?
Confirm your subscription and three welcome emails arrive over the first week:
- The Solo Sojourn research report on women over 50, RV travel, and workamping, in a six-page summary and the full paper
- Jolene’s full story: 300 applications, 2 interviews, 0 offers, and what she built instead
- An invitation to test the Solo Sojourn Trail app before the public does
Subscribers also get first access and subscriber pricing on new Solo Sojourn guides for their first 60 days, and first look at the Florida parks and workamping listings as the Trail database grows.
